Known for strength and durability, this is as true of oak charcoal as it is for the timber.  It takes longer to get to temperature than the lighter woods, but it’s tendency to open up both along the grain and concentrically give it loads of surface area to produce an intense heat. It, of course, can be slowed down by reducing airflow, but it seems a shame not to let it rage and get a fat steak on the grill.
