Sweet Chestnut

These trees are fairly common throughout the South of England, either as coppice stands or lining wide rides in country estates.

The most useful of trees, with a straight growth habit and extremely durable timber. It’s seeds are an autumnal treat for us and along with its generously produced nectar, support the wildlife of the forest.

As a raw wood Sweet Chestnut is slow to burn and provides little heat, but as charcoal it is quite a different matter… Once prized for its use in smelting metals, expect an intense heat and sweet aroma.
