Our Process

At Whittle and Flame, we have designed and built a wood distillery.

In an oxygen free environment, wood is heated to cause the thermal destructive distillation. Charcoal is retained in the kiln, while gasses and vapours exit into a cooling tower.

All Our Wood Is Certified Grown In Britain Some Of Which Is From The Woodland Right Where We Are Based

Proper woodland management is at the heart of what we do. We only harvest our wood in harmony with the natural cycles of the forest, leaving the woodland as undisturbed as possible for all its dwellers, from bluebells to butterflies to beech trees.

No Chemicals Go Into The Atmosphere

The aqueous and oil phases of vapour are condensed and collected, leaving a clean flow of permanent gasses.

Our aim is to collect and utilise everything that is produced within our process, and get as near as we can to releasing only carbon dioxide.

The gases from our kiln are cleaned ready to be utilised.

One Of The Main Products From Our Wood Distilling Process Is Wood Vinegar

We collect the wood vinegar and bio oil for home use on gardens and plants and for commercial use in agriculture as a regenerative and sustainable alternative to chemicals.

The Main Product From The Process Is Carbon. Or Charcoal.

British made charcoal following this process is the most sustainable source of fuel supporting British woodland and bio diversity and local business.

Not only this the timber-like qualities of the wood makes it easier to light and more controllable.

Solar Powered Carbon Cycles

Leaves use solar power to recycle carbon dioxide – into oxygen and trees. Clever.

We deal with the tricky bits of the carbon recycling process, so you can focus on using the recycled heat and light from the sun from your little bag of carbon batteries.

Safe in the knowledge that all that carbon in your charcoal is recycled. Magic.

Following a devastating arson attack in late summer 2024 we have been left with no production capabilities and No Charcoal.

We're on a mission to get back to doing what we love and making the best Charcoal. In the meantime as we head into Summer 2025 what we do have is our amazing Wood Vinegar, Biochar & Merchandise.
